Taking a Dive: The Lowdown on Fainting -
Imagine somebody is walking and suddenly falls down and is not responsive for a few minutes.
A faint is a brief loss of responsiveness caused by a temporary reduction of the blood flow to the brain. It may be a reaction to pain, exhaustion, lack of food or emotional stress. Sometimes standing for a long time causes inactivity causes blood to pool in the legs, reducing the amount of blood reaching the brain👤.
Fainting, medically known as syncope, is a sudden and temporary loss of consciousness due to a decrease in blood flow to the brain. It typically occurs when there's a drop in blood pressure or a lack of oxygen.ðŸ§
Dehydration and low blood sugar levels can also lead to fainting. In these cases, providing fluids and glucose can help prevent further episodes.⛑️
Fainting can sometimes be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as heart problems, so it's important to seek medical evaluation if recurrent or unexplained fainting occurs.
Caution
If the person does not regain responsiveness quickly, open the airway and check breathing.
Oxygen is essential to life.
Recognition
A slow pulse
Pale , cold skin and sweating
What to do
Golden rule -
Raise his legs, supporting the ankles on your shoulders to improve blood flow to the brain. Watch his/her face for signs of recovery.
Make sure there is plenty of fresh air, ask someone to open a window if indoors
As the person recovers
Reassure him and help him to sit up gradually, if he/ she starts to faint again, advise him to lie down once again, raise his legs until he/she recovers fully.
Do not advise him to sit on a chair when he/ she feels less responsive.
If the person is pregnant and in the late stages, help her to lie down so that she is leaning towards her left side to prevent the pregnant uterus restricting blood flow back to her heart.
Aim
To improve blood flow to the brain.
To make him comfortable.
To seek medical advice if necessary.
