Dealing with Physical Frailty: Exercises and Lifestyle Changes to Improve Strength and Mobility

In the modern era, although average life span has increased, people are more into polypharmacy to live a normal life.

Slowness, weakness and exhaustion are some parameters to define frailty.

It is a clinical state where dependency increases with the exposure to a stressor.

When we have fear of falling,  the person will not do exercise and the level of frailty increases. It is a vicious cycle.

Comorbidity is also the factor which makes them somewhat physically dependent.

It is a medical syndrome with multiple causes and contributors and it can be treated or prevented with specific modalities such as exercise, protein supplementation and vit. D intake.

Early intervention can improve quality of life and reduce costs of care.

Is frailty physical or psychological?

Yes it is a combination of both.

All disabled persons are not frail.

Identify people with physical frailty or at risk of frailty.

F   are you fatigued?

R  resistance, cannot walk up one  flight of stairs

A  aerobic, cannot walk one block

I  illnesses if more than 4 illnesses

L  loss of weight in past few months, more than 5%

Causes:

  • 1. Cognitive decline

  • 2.visual hearing problems

  • 3.depression

  • 4.Arthritis

  • 5. Congestive heart failure

Rest and be thankful

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished

Based on available data where I work, people older than 70 are doing very well, managing their own tasks, being very less dependent and doing daily activities on their own with existing comorbidities. There is a model in Dayalbagh where people have assigned  different duties depending upon their age , freedom of choosing work voluntarily and they integrate yoga practices with meditation and organic food intake in their lifestyle.

We need to develop more efficient methods to detect frailty and measure its severity

In routine practice in primary care.

Actually we need to talk about this in clinical settings.

Geriatric care should be designed according to individual based needs.

Good Nutrition ( 🍎🍊🥦 ) , positive social life, mental exercises, motivated daily life routine

Light exercises ( 🤸⛹️🏋️ ) can reverse physical frailty in the elderly people.

Just like wine 🍷 life gets better with age
