The Art of Self-Care: Nurturing Your Mental Health

“Our self can be our friend or our own enemy

                                                                                  -- Holy book Gita

Good mental health strengthens your ability to cope with everyday crises and challenges.

Prolonged continuous exposure to the anxiety provokes a situation that is like a battlefield with itself.

Psychologically we human beings are strong and understanding. Sometimes when we are hurt, subconsciously we become insensitive and dull.

There are many successful models in different holy books for the maximum benefit in the situation where the person feels on the edge, cannot take decisions and the confusion of mind or goose skin problems.

Research is starting to uncover the causes of these disorders which can include genetics, brain structure or trauma.

Psychological evaluation only can detect persons symptoms, experiences, thoughts and behavior patterns.

Stressful life leads to an immunocompromised state where inbuilt immunity of an individual is lowered, exposing him/her to different microbial diseases.

Treatment largely does not always need interventions like surgery or drugs except in extreme conditions.

Some therapies like yoga practices, practice of relaxation (meditation), hydro therapy and therapeutics of thought practices like organising a positive thought and bring it to one’s heart and to meditate on it eliminating other preoccupying alien thoughts.

Music is now being used in the care of a range of mental and physical ailments in modern times.

Morbi ties begin first in mind and in the subtle body then manifest in the gross body.

A designed yoga therapy has no conflict with mainstream yoga and they go hand in hand.

Mental health management has been emphasized by the Bhagavad Gita with the principles of elevation of higher consciousness (higher self).

“One should indulge in such deeds during daytime by which he/she gets a comfortable and carefree sleep during the night”

                                                                                      -- Bhagavad Gita

Connect to the higher consciousness everyday

Detached performance of prescribed duties is the best way of life.

Voluntary relaxation of muscles practiced by many yogis in savasana (flat lying) is claimed not to be fully

Through silencing of motor neurons rather it is also through direct manipulation of a particular group of muscles to relax.

Relaxation of motor neurons is the principal mode. No matter if it comes first or subsequent.

When we succeed, we find that the quality of our mental health improves with –

1.     Efficient perception of reality

2.     Self-knowledge

3.     Better voluntary control over our behavior

4.     Improved ability to form affectionate relationships

5.     Self esteem

6.     Productivity

I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship

                                                                           – L. May Alcott.1868

  1. Consciousness is the matrix of universal reality. Due to the limitation of our perceptual ability, consciousness appears fragmented and split at the level of body, the mind and the soul i.e., the individual, societal and universal. Practice of relaxation therapies enables us to expand our consciousness to encompass it's individual, social and spiritual realms.
